What it Means to be Content

Contentment is a form of satisfaction.  It dwells in the deeper parts of your spirit, not something that is produced by outer influence.  Being content frees up time for comparing and contrasting because it will cause you to become confident with who you are in God.  When you grow stronger in the Lord’s plans, will, and purpose, you will find a great release of yourself.

Have you ever found yourself satisfied in God’s presence?  I mean really satisfied in His presence?  You’re not worried about school, work, your spouse, what’s for dinner, the next store sale, or any of that.  Just one-on-one time with you and the Father.  It is during these moments that God is able to pour so much into you, starting with His love.  God loves you more than you will ever know.  He gives Himself so freely unto us that oftentimes, most take it for granted.

When you start drawing closer to God, He will start drawing closer to you.  As you release yourself over to Him, you will then receive more of what He has for you.  When you prepare your heart to receive more of God, you will then begin to receive all of the blessings that He has for you.  Align your heart with God’s will, call on Him more, and set aside more of your time and life for Him.

How do you begin to draw closer to God?  By first getting into His Word.  The Father’s Word is a sure way to contentment.  It is here, you will find everything you are looking for.  The words He has spoken will cause greater things to take place within you.

Seeking God is another way to receive contentment.  When you are alone and your spirit is quiet, it is then that you are able to hear from Him.  Set the atmosphere by giving Him praise and worship.  When you honor God, you will be able to enter into His presence.  Come to Him with your whole heart and hold nothing back from Him.  An honest heart is what moves God.  It is what draws Him closer to you because you are not keeping anything from Him.  Search God’s Word, call on Him more, and hide yourself in His heart.  Hide yourself in the closeness of the Father.  Come closer to Him and allow Him to show you all that He has prepared for you.

Many of God’s daughters try to find contentment in other things.  They try to find it in their jobs, in their status, their boyfriend/husband, their child/children, their appearance, and even in debt (spending excessive money trying to compete and keep up with others, or buying things for the sake of saying that they have it).  But these things will not give you permanent contentment, just temporary happiness.

Psalm 37:4 says, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”  The word delight means to hope for, to incline to, and to bend towards. A desire is a petition.  It is something that your heart is longing for or has need of.  As you submit yourself before God, He will receive you.  Another way of saying this scripture would be, “Give yourself to the Lord and He will give you that which you are petitioning Him for.”  As you trust in God more, you will find yourself more content in Him.

1 John 5:14-15 says, “This is the confidence that we have in approaching God:  that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.  And if we know he hears us, — whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” Asking God for things that are according to His will is important, take Hannah for example.

In 1 Samuel 1:1-20, there is an Ephraimite named Elkanah.  Elkanah had two wives named Peninnah and Hannah.  Peninnah had several children, but Hannah did not have any.  Every year, Elkanah would take his family to Shiloh to offer sacrifices to God.  Elkanah would give Peninnah and their children a portion of meat, but Hannah would receive a double portion because Elkanah loved her more than he loved Peninnah; because of this, Peninnah became jealous of Hannah.

She would taunt Hannah as an attempt to make her feel bad about herself because she was childless.  Year after year, Peninnah would do this to Hannah until she became angry and irritated by Peninnah’s immature tactics.  As of this point, Hannah was grieved in her soul.  She desperately cried out and prayed to the Lord.  Hannah promised God that if God blessed her with a son, she would dedicate her child back to Him and never shave his head.

Shortly after Elkanah and Hannah returned home, she became pregnant.  She had a son and named him Samuel- whose name means, “Because I asked the Lord for him.”  Hannah inclined- or delighted herself- in God. Hannah had a need.   She released her bitterness, her brokenness, and her emptiness over to God and as a result of that, He granted Hannah that which she requested-a son who would later grow up to become a well-known prophet in Israel.

Again, draw yourself closer to God; surrender completely to Him.  As you pour out your heart towards God, He will pour back into you.  He will give that which you ask for, if it is according to His will. God honors His Word and He keeps His promises to those who seek Him.  He has many things prepared for many people, but because they do not seek Him, or spend time in His presence, the deliverance of their blessings have been placed on hold.  God has released His plans before the foundation of the world, be content in knowing that you are part of them.

My prayer is that you will have confidence in knowing that God loves you more than you will ever know.  I pray that you will not look for contentment in other things or other people, but that you will look for true contentment in the heart of the Father.  May you give more of yourself to Him so that in turn, He will give more of Himself to you.  I pray that you will live a life that is obedient and submissive to Him so that He will give you the desires that are according to His will in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Amen, Kita, that’s so awesome! God is in control and He has everything that we need, but we have to willing to get closer to Him in order to understand that.

I believe that God is within all of us so once we embrace that, there’s nothing we can’t do.

When I was growing up my mom used to tell me I need to have a satisfied mind. That has been a guiding pillar for me. When you quit complaining about things God can really move on your behalf and you can hear him clearly.

      ShaBree,

Those are true words of wisdom; it is something that should be echoed more often. Thank you so much for sharing that, blessings!

I like to begin my day with reading my Bible and prayer. It is my way of staying connected with God. I find when if I skip my routine Bible/prayer time, my day just doesn’t feel right. I have to have my time with the Lord! I agree with you when we seek God, He will draw closer to us.

      Jennifer,

I start my day off the same way. Getting that quality time in with the Father first sets the tempo for the rest of my day, I can’t afford to miss it. When I neglect to do that, it just seems like there’s a major disconnect, resulting in my day not flowing smoothly. Absolutely, that’s what God wants us to do- to draw closer to Him so that He can draw closer to us.

I think we have all tried to find contentment in other things to no avail. It truly is only when we seek God to fulfill these voids that we find what we are desperately searching for.

  10. Elle (CleverlyChanging)

That’s a good word. A faith relationship doesn’t start on Sunday mornings. It is cultivated and nurtured through the day.

Amen! I so needed this printer sermon. Thank you very much.

This was right on time. I know that I am at my spiritual best when I commit to the Bible and prayer. Somehow I always seem to stray. It’s amazing how God continues to bless us even when we fall off. Thank you for this reminder to draw closer to God.

    1. LaShana Lloyd

I agree, Brittani! I too am more at my spiritual best when I sacrifice more of my time for reading the Bible and praying. Don’t worry if you stray; as long as you come back, that’s all that matters. The Father’s mercy is so amazing, we all should be thankful for that! Thank you for reading my post, God bless 🙂
