The Last Laugh

There are seasons in a woman’s life when silent pain feels louder than spoken words. Moments when tears fall privately, prayers feel unanswered, and mockery from others cuts deeper than we admit. The Bible does not shy away from these moments, it meets us there. One such story is Hannah’s, a woman whose suffering was visible, whose faith was tested, and whose obedience ultimately led to God having the final word.

Hannah was married to Elkanah, who also had another wife named Peninnah. While Peninnah had children, Hannah was barren. Scripture tells us, in 1 Samuel 1:6-7, that Peninnah mocked Hannah continually, provoking her and reminding her of what she lacked. Year after year, this caused Hannah deep anguish. Despite Elkanah’s love for her, Hannah’s pain remained. During one visit to the house of the Lord at Shiloh, Hannah wept bitterly and poured out her soul before God. In her desperation, she made a vow (1 Samuel 1:11, NIV):

“Lord Almighty, if You will only look on Your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget Your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life.”

God heard Hannah’s prayer. She conceived and gave birth to a son, Samuel. True to her word, Hannah dedicated Samuel back to the Lord, bringing him to serve in the house of God under the priest Eli (1 Samuel 1:27–28).

For years, Peninnah had the loudest voice—taunting Hannah, humiliating her, and exploiting her pain. But Peninnah’s mockery did not determine Hannah’s destiny, God did. Hannah did not fight back with words, she fought on her knees. Her story reminds us that barrenness isn’t always physical. Some women feel barren emotionally, spiritually, financially, and relationally. Others feel barren in purpose or direction. Like Hannah, we may endure seasons where it seems everyone else is flourishing while we wait in silence. Yet Hannah teaches us something powerful: pain can become a place of promise when surrendered to God.

When God answered Hannah’s prayer, it wasn’t just about giving her a child, it was about revealing His faithfulness and shifting the narrative. The woman who was once mocked became the woman who praised. The one who was ridiculed became the one God entrusted with raising a prophet. God had the last laugh—not in mockery, but in justice, redemption, and grace.

Others may not understand you. Some may even mock you. You may be silently carrying something others know nothing about. But hear this: your waiting is not wasted. Like Hannah, God is inviting you to bring your pain honestly before Him—not polished, not rehearsed, but real. Your obedience, even in sorrow, positions you for breakthrough. And when God moves, He doesn’t just bless you, He blesses generations through you. Let Hannah’s story remind you: those who mock you don’t get the final say, God does.

Father God,

Thank You for seeing us in our pain and hearing us in our prayers. Thank You for Hannah’s story—a reminder that You are faithful even when the waiting feels unbearable. Help us to trust You in the seasons of silence and to surrender our deepest desires to You. Teach us obedience even when it costs us, and give us peace knowing that You always have the final word. We place our hope in You and wait expectantly for what You will do in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Call to Repentance and Salvation

If you’ve never made the decision to follow Jesus, or if you’ve been feeling distant from Him, know this: He’s waiting for you with open arms. He desires a personal relationship with you—one rooted in love, forgiveness, and purpose.

The first step is simple: repentance. That means turning away from your old life and turning your heart fully to God.

Romans 10:9 (NIV) says,

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

If you’re ready to start, or renew, your walk with Christ, pray this prayer from your heart:

Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. I believe You died on the cross for my sins and rose again so that I can have a new life. Today, I repent of all my sins, known and unknown, and turn away from them and my old life. I invite You into my heart as my Lord and Savior. Teach me, lead me, and help me walk in obedience with You from this day forth. In Your Name, Jesus, I pray, Amen.

If you prayed that prayer, heaven is literally rejoicing, and so am I! I encourage you to get connected to a Bible-teaching church, get into God’s Word so that God’s Word can get into you, and grow in community with other believers who can support your journey. Please let me know if you made this decision so I can celebrate with you!
