Finding Strength in Surrender: A Journey of Faith and Humility

In a journey marked by the unwavering call to serve my country, I encountered obstacles that tested not only my courage but also my faith. As a black woman in the military, I faced challenges but each one became an opportunity for growth and spiritual maturity. Within the highs and lows of my service, I discovered an insightful truth that exceeded the boundaries of my circumstances – a truth rooted in the timeless wisdom of the Scriptures.

My experience in the military became a testament to my resilience and the challenges of navigating a diverse and demanding environment. Throughout my dedication and commitment, I faced moments of adversity and setbacks. In those challenging times, my faith in God provided a steadfast anchor, guiding me through those times of uncertainty.

The words of 1 Peter 5:6-7 became my hope in the darkness of uncertainty. They reminded me to humble myself under the mighty hand of God and to cast all my anxieties upon Him. In moments of doubt and fear, I turned to prayer, seeking refuge in the unwavering love and provision
of my Father. His peace washed over me like a gentle breeze, offering comfort and reassurance in the face of hardship.

Another passage, Luke 14:7-11, provided further insight into the virtue of humility. In this parable, Jesus observed the behavior of the Pharisees at a banquet and used it as a teaching moment. He cautioned against seeking glory for oneself and instead emphasized the importance of humility in God’s eyes. As I reflected on this passage, I realized the power of humility in navigating life’s challenges with grace and dignity.

While in the military, I encountered moments of discrimination and prejudice. There were times when I got angry, and there were others times when I became frustrated by it. But in spite of, I refused to allow bitterness or unforgiveness to take root in my heart; I chose to trust in God’s perfect plan for my life instead. In moments of injustice, I turned to prayer, seeking guidance to persevere with strength and knowing that the Father was with me.

One particular moment stands out in my memory – a moment of surrender and acceptance. It occurred during a time when I was assigned to a unit where the intensity of training was matched only by the weight of the racial and sexual discrimination I faced. The atmosphere was tense, and the pressures of proving myself in a predominantly male and white environment were severe. Because I chose to stand up for myself, I was blackballed from the military for it.

At that moment, I chose to release my grip on anger, offense, and resentment to trust my future in the plans God has for me. It was a pivotal moment of surrender, where I let go of the bitterness that threatened to consume me. With tears streaming down my face, I lifted my voice up in prayer, surrendering it all into God’s hands.

Reflecting on my journey, I am reminded of the timeless truth of the Word of God. It is a truth that speaks to the strength and life-changing power of faith. Whether you find yourself facing discrimination, or navigating the difficulties of everyday life, may you be encouraged by the message that Apostle Peter has for us in 1 Peter 5:6-7 where he encourages us to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God and to cast all our anxieties on Him, for He cares for us deeply.

As we surrender our pain and disappointment to the Father, may we find peace in His presence, knowing that He is faithful to sustain and carry us through the storms of life. May we walk confidently in the assurance that His timing is perfect and He will exalt us in due season.

During these moments, I discovered a newfound strength – a strength born out of faith, humility, and trust in God. Though the road was filled with obstacles and challenges, I refused to let them define me. Instead, I embraced each trial as an opportunity for growth and change, trusting that the Father would use every setback for His glory. Through perseverance and determination, I got up from the place of hopelessness stronger and better than ever before.

As I look to the future, I am filled with hope and anticipation for what lies ahead. Though the path may be uncertain, I know that God is faithful to fulfill His promises and guide me along the way. With His hand leading the way, I am confident that I can face whatever challenges may come my way with boldness and courage. And as I continue to walk in faith, I am reminded of the words of Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God.” In moments of uncertainty, may we find confidence in knowing that the Father is in control and that His plans for us are always good.

Let us pray:

Father, we come before You with humble hearts, laying down our fears, doubts, and disappointments. We thank You for Your unfailing love and provision, even in the midst of adversity. Help us to trust in Your perfect plan, knowing that You are always with us, guiding us, and sustaining us. Grant us the strength to surrender our pain and disappointment to You, finding peace in Your presence. May Your will be done in our lives, and may we walk confidently in the assurance of Your love and provision. In Jesus’ Name, we pray, Amen.
